Open House: Blue/White Cabinet
There have been many requests to see the new place and really I would love to show you . . . but not one room is complete. Its hard to spend money on a rental and even harder to piece together your furniture from many other rentals into a new rental jigsaw puzzle style. We've lived in three places in four years. Ugg.
This being said, my friend Brooke posted this picture on her blog today.
I felt (kind of) cool, because I have a similar concept in my built in. Note, I use the word similar very loosely. Okay, the only thing similar is a blue and white color scheme and the minor Asian pottery theme. More on that later.
Mixed amongst the glasses are a few pieces of rice china from my great aunt Weze. Her Filipino friends buried it for her in her back yard during World War II, while she was a prisoner in the Santo Tomas internment camp. After the war she dug it up, everything was in perfect condition!
I have (had) plans to use the rice china along with the plates my mother in law gave me for Christmas (also blue and white) for Fisher's baptism. Unfortunately it doesn't look like that is going to happen anytime soon.
How did I start talking about home decorating, touch on WWII and end with baptism? Most random post ever.

Airplane Nightmare
To the nice lady in 11b. . .I'm
sorry. I set us up to fail. I never should have announced to all of the
passengers in ear shot that Fisher "travels well"
while boarding the aircraft. Within 20 minutes of take off you (and all
our neighbors) knew I lied. Even a Florida tan couldn't cover the
red shame in my cheeks as I saw you covering your nose and mouth while
trying to politely ignore my child's blow out diaper. No it is not
normal for a diaper to leak through a onesie. . .pants. . .blanket and
onto my jeans. As I lay in bed typing this many hours later I can still
smell Fisher's take off performance . You may have noticed me starring longingly for the seat belt sign to go off- it never did. Stupid turbulence .
I promise I had an extra diaper. After all, I didn't want to torture all of
your senses at once and I knew your ears must be ringing from the shrieks of a
15 week old baby hating life. Mine sure did. The
extra loud, play by play commentary of the 6 year old girl behind us made you really wonder how you struck seat assignment gold.
"the baby is crying"
"the baby stopped crying"
"why is the baby crying"
"I HATE the baby crying"
I felt your pain little lady, I hated the baby crying too . . .
But I think what really threw you, 11B over the edge was the forceful toss of
the pacifier over your lap and into the aisle next to your seat. Thank
you for bending over and returning it. Yes I popped it right back in
my child's mouth. Don't look so surprised, five days later and he is still alive. I weighed the options and felt this little piece of plastic was too important to give up. It was the only
artillery we had in our fight against a full scale meltdown by both
mother and child. In my opinion, a little plane grime was a small price to pay and with every forced suck of this dirty pacifier the cars on earth grew larger from micro minis to tonka trucks. I have never been more thankful to get off a plane. I am sure you felt the same way.
And don't worry as soon as we stepped foot onto the jet bridge tears made way to giggles. Of course.

Life's a Beach
I like to imagine what its like to be Fisher- everything in his world is new. Last week was a BIG week of firsts, first trip on a plane, first walk on the beach with sand between his toes, first swim in crashing waves, first visit with great-grandma Barbara and the first instance of his mother sneaking him ice cream. Opps. I don't remember any of these moments in my life, but maybe he can look back on this blog and see evidence of all his firsts? I guess that's the point.
What makes these firsts all the more special is sharing them with family. While driving us to the airport my dad mentioned how lucky he felt to get the chance to meet and play with his grandson, many people don't have this opportunity. Meanwhile I keep thinking how lucky Fisher is to have 2 sets of grandparents who can't get enough of him and 4 living great grandmas. He better not be the solo grandchild for long, it might start going to his head.
Clearly I am feeling sentimental tonight, it must be because the Amazing Race started up again, that show always makes me cry.

Long Distance Love
Nick likes to say Valentine's Day is lame. He claims he doesn't need a special day to say I love you. In his opinion St Valentine's Day is perfect for dating couples looking for an excuse to take their relationship to the next level. He obviously has a complex analysis on who actually benefits from Feb 14. Variables in this analysis include age, and length of dating amongst others.
My analysis is less complex. I love my husband on Valentine's Day because he encourages me to travel to Florida alone, while he sits in freezing Michigan working his tail off to support us (and pay for our trip). Happy Valentine's Day favorite husband. Thanks for recognizing how much I love travel, the beach and spending time with family. You made it all happen this week. It shows how well you know and love me.
Or you really went out of your way to avoid purchasing a gift.

Best Friends
It's tough moving to a town where you don't know anyone. Your son's best friend becomes a 15 pound border terrier.
I promise we will find you some friends soon Fisher. . . of the human variety. Until then enjoy this time in your life where its socially acceptable to have a dog as your constant companion and favorite friend, actually this never changes. I hope you always have a fluffy puppy in your life.
